A while back I made an RP rabbit about how no one is a bad RPer. And it’s still something I think holds true. Everyone is growing and developing and learning. When someone tells you you’re bad, often, they’re ‘better’. Maybe they have better spelling, grammar, have really good plots, amazing stories… so what? The point of RP is to have fun and often we forget that. There are certainly bad ways to go about RPing, but the fact is, you eventually grow out of them. It doesn’t define you as a bad RPer. You learn and grow from past mistakes. Refusing to learn is perhaps the thing that is most harmful to do to yourself, but even that people grow out of.
Growth in a great inevitable. Sorta like death but not…final. Growth never stops. If you stop in one way, you grow in others. It may be small, hard to find, but you do grow. You DO get better. When someone tears you down just remember that once upon a time they were just as bad as you, probably worse. They grew, and while they may be kind of a dick, who cares? Have fun. Strive to improve. Listen to advice, (even if you think it’s harsh), never say no, and keep going. Don’t stop. Any time you feel bad, look back at where you came from. Look at how far you’ve gone.
Take each experience and build on it. Learn how you can improve and try it. Our stories and characters are precious to us, and its brave to subject them to the view of others. In simply hitting submit you have shown you are brave, and you do want to grow. But like all ‘parents’ if we shelter them, refuse to let them take a few hits, are we really protecting them? There are always extremes but even those you have to face. The worst critic is often yourself. Face the critiques and criticisms, face them and accept them.
They may come now, but one day you can look back and say that you surpassed them. You became better than them. Never, ever, give up. Keep striving to get better. Keep writing, even if you think it’s crap. Because that crap is one day going to become gold.
Keep writing. Have faith in yourself. Aim to have fun. Aim to become better. Don’t give up because out there, someone will read your words and aspire to be just as good. Someone will aspire to surpass.
Surpass you goals, and keep heading up, because with RP there really is no end to the potential to your growth.
